Britain First – banned from facebook (about time!)

Britain First (website: britainfirst.org) is a racist group and political party in UK who have previously conducted many campaigns against Islam and multiculturalism.

On the Britian First facebook page there was over 2 million likes.  It is thought that unlike some other pages who buy fake likes, Britain First actually had genuine real likes, although it could be argued more often than not that the people actually liking the page and post did not know the fully extent of Britain First and their racist conduct.  The group used an image of Fusilier Lee Rigby (against the wishes of his family) in an extra effort to gain likes to their facebook page.

The leaders of Britain First are currently serving prison sentences.  Jayda Fransen has a 36 week prison sentence whilst her counterpart Paul Golding has 18 weeks.

The judge said: “I have no doubt it was their joint intention to use the facts of the case (in Canterbury) for their own political ends. It was a campaign to draw attention to the race, religion and immigrant background of the defendants.”

Seeing the barrage of Britain First memes and videos showing circulated throughout facebook come to an end is most welcoming.

Facebook stated: “We are an open platform for all ideas and political speech goes to the heart of free expression. But political views can and should be expressed without hate. People can express robust and controversial opinions without needing to denigrate others on the basis of who they are. There are times though when legitimate political speech crosses the line and becomes hate speech designed to stir up hatred against groups in our society.”
